The Duong Long towers

Data from the Binh Dinh General Museum show that there are in the province 231 relics. Of these, more than 60 relics have been recognized as national/ provincial relics and many of them are of high cultural values.

The results of archaeological surveys and excavation show that a number of relics of the Sa Huynh culture have been found in coastal areas stretching from Tam Quan to Quy Nhon, including Truong Xe, Go Loi (Phu My), Hoi Loc, Nui Ngang (Quy Nhon), Thuan Dao, Chanh Trach (Phu My), Dong Cuom, Go Thap, Ca Cong, Dong Bau Nang, Phu Nhuan, Cong Nhon (Hoai Nhon). Scientists consider Binh Dinh as one of the three centers of the Sa Huynh culture (the other two centers are Quang Nam and Quang Ngai). Dong Cuom is the most important vestige of the Sa Huynh culture. During five centuries (between the 10th century and the 15th century) living in Binh Dinh, Cham people built many architectural works such as temples, towers, citadels, and ramparts. They also created many sculptures with materials such as stone and terracotta. Presently, nice Cham citadels still exist in the central region, three of which are located in Binh Dinh. Of the 20 groups of temples and towers and 41 old architectural styles that still exist in central Vietnam, eight groups of temples and towers and 14 architectural styles are in Binh Dinh. Archaeologists said that Cham relics in Binh Dinh are very diverse in type as well as in architectural style.

There are in Binh Dinh province many relics of the Tay Son time. These include the Quang Trung temple-museum complex and an architectural work that reminds today’s people of King Nguyen Nhac. The ancient-styled thatched houses in Binh Dinh form a typical cultural feature of the central region. The Department of Cultural Heritage and the Binh Dinh General Museum have surveyed and selected 35 most typical houses of this type for conservation purposes. Binh Dinh was also the capital of the Inter-region 5 during the war of resistance against the French colonists. The today’s city of Quy Nhon was the only place in Southern Vietnam to gather military troops before they went to the north. During the 21 years of the war of resistance against the American imperialists, Binh Dinh was one of important battlefields of the Vietnamese people.

Though Binh Dinh has so many advantages, the tourism potential of the province remains untapped. To improve the situation, the provincial cultural sector has worked hard to restore relics and prevent them from degrading. Most of the architectural and cultural relics in the province have been restored and consolidated. Many monuments and memorial houses have been built to remind today’s people of the revolutions of the Vietnamese people as well as of famous celebrities.

Binh Dinh province pays much attention to conserving the cultural and historical values of the Quang Trung temple-museum complex. This relic therefore has become more attractive to visitors. Two other relics, Ganh Rang (Quy Nhon) and Ham Ho (Tay Son) are becoming tourist sites of Binh Dinh. The province is restoring some relics such as Go Dai (Tay Son), Canh Tien tower (An Nhon), and Duong Long tower (Tay Son).

In addition to 200km of coastline and a number of eco-tourist sites, resorts and beautiful beaches, Binh Dinh has many historical and cultural relics. This makes Binh Dinh attractive to tourists, especially foreign visitors. The province is utilizing its advantages to develop tourism and boost socioeconomic development.
