The first Vietnam forest product festival taking place in Quy Nhon in late March is not an opportunity for Vietnam’s forestry sector to work out measures for the sustainable development but a chance to promote the province’s tourism.

The domestic forestry sector has continuously reaped many achievements and become a spearhead sector, according to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Hua Duc Nhi. In 2000, Vietnam’s forest product earned only US$219 million, but the figure was US$3.4 billion in 2010.

The export turnover of the forestry sector is higher and higher, making Vietnam rank 2nd among South East Asian countries which export wooden furniture, he added.

Many experts, businesses, and tourists came to the festival, generating a golden opportunity for Binh Dinh to popularize its unique features and attract more domestic and foreign visitors.

“We want domestic and foreign tourists to know more about Binh Dinh, a land having potential for tourism development,” said Chairman of Binh Dinh People’s Committee Le Huu Loc.

The province will focus on the tourism infrastructure, such as Trung Luong, Vinh Hoi, and Hai Giang, in the 2011-2015 period. The eco-tourism and cultural tourism will be prioritized; investors are also encouraged to build modern tourist site meeting international standards.

The local authorities will focus on some tourism promotion programs and such events as forest product festival and international festival of Vietnam traditional martial arts.

Binh Dinh will also give more attention to foreign tourism markets, particularly in Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand.

The province’s tourism potential is expected to be fully exploited through various activities, including fairs, exhibitions, and FAM trip.

With available advantages, Binh Dinh tourism has strived to become one of key industries contributing the province’s socio-economic development.
